Journey to Stardom

My Career Path As a Professional Footballer

After a good season in Academy football Broja headed to Holland to experience a full season in men’s football with Vitesse Arnhem.

The striker gave a strong account of himself in the top flight of Dutch football, recording 11 goals in 34 appearances, making him one of the top-scoring teenagers in Europe.

Broja finished his loan spell at Vitesse as their joint-top scorer in the Eredivisie for the 2020–21 season.

Broja’s second spell on loan was closer to home, in the Premier League with Southampton for the 2021/22 season. He initially had to be patient for his opportunities, featuring mainly from the bench early on, despite scoring twice on his debut, an 8-0 Carabao Cup victory over Newport County.

However, he took his chance with both hands when it arrived, netting the only goal of a 1-0 win over Leeds United on his first Premier League start and getting the second in a 2-2 draw with Burnley in the Saints’ next match. It made him the first Albanian to score in the competition.

He featured more regularly as the season went on, showing fine form in the winter with a run of four goals in eight Premier League starts, finishing the campaign with nine to his name in all competitions. Only set-piece specialist James Ward-Prowse surpassed that tally for Southampton.

Having already appeared three times from the bench for Thomas Tuchel’s side in the early weeks of the season, at the start of September 2022, Broja signed a new six-year contract with the club.

He made his Champions League debut from the bench in Tuchel’s last game as head coach, away at Dinamo Zagreb, and remained in the frame following the arrival of Graham Potter, featuring in five of our six group-stage fixtures.

His first goal for the Blues arrived in impressive style when Chelsea hosted Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League in October 2022, latching on to Mateo Kovacic’s pass and turning inside the defence before firing into the bottom corner to complete a 3-0 victory.

Having represented Albania, his parents’ homeland, at Under-19s and Under-21s level, Broja made his senior international debut for the country as a substitute in a 1-0 Nations League defeat to Lithuania and followed it up with his first start a month later, as they drew 0-0 at Kazakhstan in the same competition.

It was in Albania’s qualification campaign for the 2022 World Cup that Broja became a regular for the country, as he announced his arrival on the international scene with a string of stand-out performances in 2021, starting when he came off the bench to score a late goal to give Albania a 1-0 home win over Hungary in May 2021.

He repeated the trick with another decisive goal as a substitute as they beat Hungary by the same scoreline the next month. Sandwiched between those two games, he scored and got two assists in a 5-0 thrashing of San Marino, meaning Broja had found the net in three consecutive competitive internationals.
